Juice cleanse day 4: had quite an intense yoga class yesterday evening and I’m quite the sweaty Betty so needed some serious replenishments Roots and Bulbs is a cute lil juice place that does just juice and organic patisserie bits is we popped in total bliss C1 is carrot, ginger and chili me other half had G1 which had spinach,  celery, ginger,  chili, cucumber we thought mine was better as the ginger and chili really complemented each other.  Chili and ginger are fantastic for the immune system fending off colds and other minor ailments that bother us from time to time pop both these ingredients into your stir frys and soups, see the extra kick you get from it.

Juice Cleanse Day 2: We’re getting grouchy in the Smiley household just juice is sending us slightly up the wall so I went scouring for something to chew – a girl needs to chew ya’ll feel me! So here we are – nuts. My favorite nut ever, pistachios,  walnuts not do much but choices are limited here when on a juice cleanse.  The good thing is that the nutritious benefits are vast. Pistachios are a rich source of energy they are an excellent source of Vitamin E help remove toxic free radicals therefore protecting us from diseases and infections, the oil extracted is one of the healthiest you can use for cooking.  The skin also benefits from reduced dryness, and for those into aromatherapy it’s a great carrier oil for massage therapy and the cosmetic field.

Juice Cleanse: Tanilising Tumeric

Day one: So today I have started a juice cleanse to purge my system of all the toxins and jump-start my energy levels for the new month. I’m anticipating great things so I’m starting as I mean to go on by giving my body the treatment it needs so that I can begin really putting my plans in place. If you don’t know about the benefits of Turmeric get to know, then you can thank me later. It has been used for centuries in India within the holistic medical science of Ayurveda and china to cure a wide range of conditions, and now the western herbalists have started to recognise Turmeric as a therapeutic healer and I believe the pharmaceutical industry have started producing it in tablet form. It is one of the spices with so many amazing properties and health benefits including being a potent anti inflammatory so stomachache colds heartburn can be relieved using Turmeric. Sprinkle more of this spice while cooking and add it to your juices but do make a conscious effort to start using it in your daily consumption of good and feel the differences in your body

Day 3 juice Cleanse: Happy Saturday to you. I woke up full of beans today. Loads of energy and noticed that my skin is starting to looking pretty fabulous – rock on! Before long the familiar grumble in the stomach started meaning juice time when I could really have done with French toast or an almighty fry up but no can do am in it for the long haul So here it is the brunch for today. Watermelon another favorite of mine, addictive avocados  nutritional superstar that’s so rich in vitamins and nutrients I can barely contain myself! Great for lowering, cholesterol it’s been linked to reduced blood pressure due to the potassium it contains. It’s high in fat but most of the fats it contains is a major component in olive oil and is responsible for some of the great properties olive oil has to offer. I also have to mention here that fat isn’t bad for you! Time Magazine did an article in this and confirmed what many of us have known for years – but I’ll talk about fat another time. It’s great for hair as well so if you have a very dry scalp do a deep hot oil treatment with avocado oil use very little it’s very moisturising so can easily go the other way. The Tantilising Tumeric juice made an appearance and some root tea I got from Morocco – that’s it.

With pancake day already here (gosh this month is flying) one of the things I’m trying to integrate into my daily eating habit is a healthy balance between the foods I love and the food groups offering essential nutritional value.

At the moment I’ve been having 2 cheat meals a week i.e. anything I want to consume and I take full advantage of this. So this week I thought I’d invent something new (as it’s getting hard) and ensure I have only one cheat meal which in my book is still considerably healthy.

Yoga at Crisis for Christmas

I’ve always wanted to volunteer over Xmas but never went through with it for one reason or other but mainly due to pressure of the family being together once a year. I love my family we always have a great time when together but I’m not a christmas person. I love the mulled wine, the get togethers and the food sharing aspect of it but don’t buy into the perfect family home advertisers give us a sneaky view into making us wish we had that life portraying the perfect family unit as the only way to spend Christmas. The truth is for many people Christmas is a time of anxiety and stress. It’s a time when families are forced to be together albeit not having the best relationship but for the sake of one day have to make it work.

So this year I thought I’d give up my time of eating and sleeping too much and volunteer for those who not only don’t have that perfect family unit but they also don’t have a place to call home. Each year, Crisis hold a week long event (Crisis at Christmas) where they open their doors to over 3,000 guests. They serve 3 hot meals a day including Christmas dinner which is only possible through the generous donation of food from the general public. Other aspects of Crisis for Christmas involved the simple things we take for granted such as having a shower and getting a change of clothes. Crisis also invited lawyers, dentists, hairdressers, beauticians, entertainment and educational activities where guests could participate, befriend and have a Christmas they wouldn’t otherwise have.

As a newly qualified yoga teacher I was more than delighted to unleash my new skills on the world for those who would otherwise not have access to yoga. We meditated, we flowed in asana, we talked. What I found was very interesting. Some of the guests knew more than me and I felt blessed to learn something new from them. There was a lovely moment when a guest and I stayed in a headstand for 15 minutes together – it was a blissful, humbling moment that I’ll never forget.

So that’s it people all in all it it was a great few days. I met some fantastic people who I’m happy to say are now friends, had some heated political debate with some of the guests and shared space with a fellow yogi who taught me something new – a lovely end to a fabulous year! Please do if you can get involved with Crisis not just at Christmas but any time of year the work they do is life changing. Just remember a little thing you may do will make a world of difference to another…

Everlasting Eggnog

One of the key drinks that spells holiday spirit to me is eggnog. The first time I’d ever heard of it was whist watching Trading Places starring Eddie Murphy. When the mystery has been solved surrounding Winthorpe’s identity, Coleman (the butler), offers it as a celebratory drink for justice; from that moment onwards I became quite obsessed with this luscious drink albeit not particularly enamored with  the consistency for the formular as I’m not a “shake” person.

Few weeks ago we went to this great diner in Camden and I opted to have this vanilla shake with bourbon (very similar to eggnog) – it was amazing (methinks it was the alcohol) point is I was more than ready to make an eggnog but one that was less calorific! Hi guys So I’ve been MIA for a while now winding down from the summer eating a lot of carbs, drinking way too many cocktails, swimming in Shordich House and catching up with my beautiful friends who were in town. In the month of October when everywhere is cooling down, Morocco is still hotting up with temperatures of 30 + degrees it’s no wonder sun seekers are making an autumnal dash for this hectic yet peaceful haven and this is why I chose Marrakech as my destination in which to decompress from the pressure cooker that is London. One of the things I adore about life in Marrakech are the elaborate, decadent lunches. Food here is heathy really Today we are treated to grilled sardines and an array of colourful and vibrant vegetables cooked with some of the popular earthy spices that are a natural resource to the country, turmeric, cumin and paprika are amongst some of the flavours you’ll recognise. Morocco is the largest exporter of canned sardines to Europe and a staple of the diet here so I’m pretty intrigued to see what they are like fresh especially as I can and I’m not disappointed…
